BFF date night + Woman in Gold review

Klimt crop

My hubby was away this week so I’ve been flying solo. One of the worst things about him being away is missing Wednesday’s date night. Not only is it good for our relationship, it’s also wonderfully ace for me to have a night off from the kids. I figured there was no point in missing out on the exceptional services of our super wow-wow-wow babysitter that I have locked in every Wednesday. So I grabbed one of my besties from high school {Kizza and she actually came and grabbed me} and we hit the big screen.

I showed her a sneaky place to park in Manuka, introduced her to Zambreros, I singlehandedly made us late for the movie and chick-flick-dated the crap out of her. We saw Woman in Gold and here’s what we thought!

Jenny SaysJen said: I knew nothing about this one going in. Not seeing the preview is my new hot tip for extra movie enjoyment. I really hate spoiler trailers. This film is beautiful. It is set between California and Austria and flips between the past and present through clever segways. All the characters except for Katie Holme’s one are really well defined! That’s probably a bit unfair, but given her status you’d think she would be in it more! It’s really hard to understand the shocking things that happened in the Nazi days. It boggled my mind and hurt my heart. The storyline hooked me early in {remember we were late} and my love of art has skyrocketed. I want a Klimt painting now too [insert Veruca’s whiny voice from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory]. I’d see it again. 4.5 stars.

KizzKizz said: I had the pleasure of being JT’s fill-in date this Wednesday while hubby was away. Love it! We saw Woman of Gold, which I knew had something to do with a little old lady’s fight to reclaim a Gustav Klimt family painting stolen from the Nazis. I love Klimt, but I’m always nervous going into a movie about war and the Holocaust as they’re usually pretty gut wrenching and I’m never sure if I’ll hold myself together. But the way this movie was put together was really moving. I loved the history behind the painting and the acting – even Katie Holmes’ two lines – was fab! 4 stars.  Overall date score 5++

A big difference Girlie date vs Married date was normally hubby and I hot tail it out of there at the hint of credits; but Kizz and I stayed seated and talked our mouths off for quite a while after the movie had ended. In fact soooo long after, that we eventually looked up and realised we were sitting in a huge empty cinema. But not for long. Soon people started to pile in. We kept talking and laughing and eventually the curtains rolled back, the lights dimmed and a movie began. We got comfy. Lucky for us Woman in Gold started again! I am so glad because we then watched the portion that we missed. The funniest part would have to be the bit where we got up and walked out. The bunch of older ladies looked absolutely shocked when we stood up and left 15 minutes. We even heard a gasp. This made us laugh even more!

Oh and Kizz and I have been looking at buying a Gustav Klimt posters. Such a cheap and easy way to add a pop of history and art to your house that you can easily change down the track. I like this site and this one.  Since writing this piece, I have been contacted by Artsy who work directly with high caliber galleries. If you are interested in some serious works, you can inquire directly online. What a wonderful world we live!
